Fine weave or heavy weave

The Fine Mesh is the band most people picture when they hear Milanese. Thin stainless steel wire, 0.02 in (0.6 mm) across, is woven into a flat, dense mesh with a soft sheen. It sits close to the wrist, bends with it, and has no links or holes. It suits dress watches, slim automatics and simple quartz watches, and it gives a sports watch a dressier look. The fine weave comes in silver, black, gold and rose gold. Silver is the natural match for a steel case, black suits dark dials and black cases, and gold and rose gold pick up warm-toned cases and dials.

The same band is also made in a heavy weave of 0.04 in (1.0 mm) wire, listed in the color picker as Black, heavy, Gold, heavy and Rose Gold, heavy. The heavy weave has larger rows of wire that you can make out from a few feet away, a thicker profile and more weight on the wrist. If your watch is slim or under about 40 mm, the fine weave keeps the proportions right. On a larger diver or sports watch, the heavy weave stands up better to the size of the case.

Both weaves close with the folding clasp and have straight ends. If you are still deciding between mesh, links and leather, our guide to choosing a watch strap compares them.

Lug widths and fit

The Fine Mesh comes in 18, 20 and 22 mm. Order the width that matches the gap between your watch's lugs exactly: a band that is too narrow shifts on the spring bars, and one that is too wide will not fit. Measure across the inside of the lugs with a ruler or calipers; our fit guide shows how. Odd sizes count too: a watch with 19 mm lugs needs a 19 mm band, and neither an 18 nor a 20 mm band will sit right on it.

The ends are straight tubes for standard spring bars, so the band fits any watch with ordinary lugs, from dress watches to divers. Watches with an integrated bracelet or a smartwatch connector need a band made for them.

Not every color is made in every width. In the fine weave, silver comes in 18 and 22 mm, black in 18 and 20 mm, rose gold in 18, 20 and 22 mm, and gold in 22 mm. In the heavy weave, black comes in 18 mm, gold in 18 and 22 mm, and rose gold in 20 and 22 mm.

Setting the length at the folding clasp

The clasp is a flat folding buckle with a hinged plate inside that clamps onto the mesh wherever you close it. To set the length, open the clasp, slide it along the band until the fit is snug with room for one finger underneath, and press it shut. Check that it has closed fully before you wear it.

There are no links to remove and nothing to count, so you can loosen or tighten the band any day: a little looser in summer heat, a little closer in winter. The first time you size it, center the watch on top of your wrist before you close the clasp, so the dial sits straight and the clasp ends up underneath.

Care

Stainless steel copes with rain, hand washing and a swim, and unlike leather it does not mind sweat, which makes it an easy band for hot summers. Mesh does trap skin, soap and lotion between the wires, so rinse it under warm water every few weeks, brush along the weave with a soft toothbrush and a drop of mild soap, rinse again and pat it dry. After the sea or a pool, a quick rinse in fresh water is enough. Use a soft dry cloth on the black, gold and rose gold finishes and keep metal polish away from them.

Questions

What is the difference between the fine and the heavy weave?

The fine weave is woven from 0.02 in (0.6 mm) wire and looks flat and smooth. The heavy weave uses 0.04 in (1.0 mm) wire, so its rows are larger, the band is thicker and it weighs more. Fine suits slim and dress watches; heavy suits larger sports and dive watches.

How does the folding clasp adjust?

It clamps onto the mesh wherever you close it. Open it, slide it along the band until the fit is snug with room for one finger, and close it again. There are no links to remove, so you can change the fit whenever you like.

Will it fit my watch?

Yes, if your watch has standard lugs with spring bars and a lug width of 18, 20 or 22 mm. Measure the gap between the lugs and order that exact width. Watches with integrated bracelets or smartwatch connectors need their own bands.

How do I clean a mesh band?

Rinse it under warm water, then brush along the weave with a soft toothbrush and a drop of mild soap to lift skin and lotion from between the wires. Rinse again and pat it dry with a towel. After the sea or a pool, a rinse in fresh water is enough.
