A two-piece band in stitched woven nylon

The Halyard is a two-piece watch band in densely woven nylon, stitched along both edges in a matching thread. Both halves have straight ends with quick-release spring bars already fitted, and the band closes with a brushed metal tang buckle. The fabric is light on the wrist and has a fine, even weave that looks tidy with a field watch on the weekend and with a steel sports watch at the office.

Each color name has two words: the first is the color of the band, the second is the finish of the buckle. Navy/Black is a navy band with a black buckle, and Navy/Gold is the same navy band with a gold-tone buckle. There are twelve pairs: Navy/Black, Navy/Gold, Black/Gold, Olive/Black, Olive/Gold, Khaki/Black, Khaki/Gold, Brown/Gold, Gray/Gold, Beige/Gold, Yellow/Black and Yellow/Gold. A black buckle sits quietly next to black and dark gray cases, while the gold tone picks up gold hands, markers or a gold-tone case.

The band comes in 18, 20 and 22 mm. Every pair is made in all three widths except Olive/Black, which comes in 18 and 22 mm. It suits field watches, dive watches, chronographs and dress watches with standard straight lugs, as well as smartwatches that take standard spring bars in those widths. It won't fit watches with an integrated bracelet or a proprietary strap connector. If you're still weighing materials, read which watch strap to choose, or browse the rest of our watch bands.

Sizing and how to measure

The width has to match your watch. Measure the gap between the lugs in millimeters with a ruler or caliper, then pick the same size: 18 mm lugs take the 18 mm band, 20 mm lugs the 20 mm band and 22 mm lugs the 22 mm band. A band that is too narrow leaves gaps at the lugs and lets the watch shift, and one that is too wide won't fit between them. If your lugs measure 19 or 21 mm, this band isn't the right match.

The fit on your wrist is set with the tang buckle and the row of holes in the longer half. Our fit guide shows how to measure your lug width and your wrist, step by step.

Fitting the quick-release bars

You don't need a tool to fit the Halyard. Each spring bar has a small lever on the underside that pulls the pin in when you slide it.

  1. Lay the watch face down on a soft cloth.
  2. Slide the lever on the buckle half, set the far end of the bar into one lug hole at 12 o'clock, line the pin up with the other hole and let go.
  3. Fit the half with the holes at 6 o'clock the same way.
  4. Give each half a light tug to check that both pins have clicked into their lug holes.

To take your old strap off, you may need a spring-bar tool, unless it has quick-release bars too. Once the Halyard is on, changing it takes seconds, which makes it easy to keep two or three colors and swap them to suit your plans or your outfit.

Caring for woven nylon

Woven nylon is light and dries quickly after sweat or rain. After salt water or a chlorinated pool, rinse the band in fresh water and let it dry. To clean it, take it off the watch, wash it by hand in lukewarm water with a little mild soap, press out the water in a towel and let it air-dry flat, away from direct heat. Wipe the buckle dry when it gets wet, and keep perfume and cleaning sprays off the black and gold-tone finishes. How far you can take the watch into water still depends on the watch's own water resistance.

Questions

What do the two words in each color name mean?

The first word is the color of the band and the second is the finish of the buckle. Khaki/Black is a khaki band with a black buckle, and Khaki/Gold is the same band with a gold-tone buckle.

Do I need a tool to fit it?

No. Quick-release spring bars come fitted to both halves: slide the small lever, set the bar into the lug holes and let go. Removing your old strap may need a spring-bar tool, unless it has quick-release bars too.

Which width should I choose?

Match the gap between your lugs, measured in millimeters. The Halyard comes in 18, 20 and 22 mm, and every color pair is made in all three widths except Olive/Black, which comes in 18 and 22 mm.

Is the gold buckle solid gold?

No. It is a metal tang buckle with a gold-tone finish, there to pick up gold hands, markers or a gold-tone case. Wipe it dry after it gets wet and keep perfume off it to look after the finish.

Can I wear it in the rain or at the beach?

Yes. Woven nylon dries quickly after sweat or rain. After salt water or a pool, rinse it in fresh water and let it air-dry flat. How deep you can take the watch depends on its own water resistance.
