The Ribbon skinny leather band for Apple Watch, in 10 colors from Black to Sage

The Ribbon is a skinny leather band for Apple Watch. It flares only at the connector, where it meets the case, and stays narrow everywhere else, all the way to the tip. On the wrist it reads closer to a bracelet than to a sports band, which makes it a good match for a slim wrist, an office day or an evening out.

Most colors are smooth leather with stitched edges. Brown has a pebbled grain instead, for a bit more texture. The buckle is small and silver-tone on most colors, and Black/Gold pairs black leather with a gold-tone buckle.

There are ten colors: Black, Black/Gold, Brown, Gray, Light Gray, Dusty Rose, Pink, Olive, Sage and Light Blue. The blacks, browns and grays go with anything. The pinks, the two greens and the blue add some color to a plain watch without shouting.

The narrow strap suits a smaller case best. On a 40 or 41 mm watch, the band and the case look balanced. On a 45 or 49 mm case, the contrast between a big case and a slim strap is stronger; some people like exactly that, and if you don't, a full-width leather band is the safer pick.

Case sizes and colors per size

You choose the band by the case size of your watch. It is engraved on the back of the case, and the Watch app on your iPhone shows it under My Watch, General, About. There are four options:

• 38/40/41: for 38, 40 and 41 mm cases.
• 42 (S10+): for the 42 mm case of Series 10 and later.
• 44/45/49: for 44, 45 and 49 mm cases, every Ultra included, and also for the 42 mm case of Series 1 to 3.
• 46 (S10+): for the 46 mm case of Series 10 and later.

S10+ stands for Series 10 and later. Owners of a 42 mm watch need to know its Series: an early Series 1 to 3 takes 44/45/49, a Series 10 or newer takes 42 (S10+).

Eight of the ten colors come in all four sizes. Black is made for 42 (S10+), 44/45/49 and 46 (S10+), but not for 38/40/41. For those cases, pick Black/Gold, which comes in 38/40/41 and 46 (S10+). Our fit guide explains how to check your size.

Fitting and care

You don't need tools. Turn the watch face down, press and hold the band release button, and slide the old band out sideways. Then slide each half of The Ribbon in until you feel a click: the buckle half goes at the top of the watch, the half with the holes at the bottom.

A narrow band has less leather to steady the watch, so wear it snug enough that the case stays on top of your wrist instead of rolling to the side. You should still be able to slide a finger under the strap.

Keep the leather dry. Take the band off before a shower, a swim or a workout that will soak it, and don't leave it to soak. If it gets wet, pat it dry and let it air dry at room temperature, away from a heater or direct sun. Wipe it now and then with a soft, dry cloth. Light Gray, Light Blue and the pinks can pick up dye from dark denim, so give them a wipe after a day in new jeans. When you are not wearing the band, store it flat or loosely curled and out of direct sun, so the leather keeps its shape and color.
